Christmas Events

There are some aspects of planning a business Christmas party that make it easier than other events, and some that make it harder.

First, you have a built-in theme—Christmas. You won’t have any problems finding party-themed table coverings or decorations. Red and green are pretty standard color schemes, and refreshments can be eggnog and Christmas cookies.

But then again, there’s political correctness to consider. Some people may be offended by a manger scene; others by Santa Claus. Will you greet guests by saying “Merry Christmas” or the safer “Happy Holidays”.

Who will be the guests at the event? Will it be clients alone, or customers and employees? If employees, are spouses or children included? What gifts will be given, and to whom? Will you have entertainment or background music? What foods will you serve? Will the format be the more casual open house or one or two set hours? Will alcohol be served?

Like all events, you will have an event budget to work with. You need to find a suitable location, and schedule the event for an appropriate date and time. You might need to hire a Santa Claus. Develop a timeline for the event to keep activities moving at a steady flow.

In planning any event, you need to know the Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why. Your boss will want to know How Much?

Many business events require quantifiable results. But it may be impractical to try to quantify the results of an employee Christmas party. On the one hand, the office Christmas party may be the routine, expected annual tradition. On the other hand, if planned well, the office party can boost morale and allow employees to get to know one another better.

A Christmas party to honor clients and customers may also be difficult to quantify. You may have to listen carefully for comments, or conduct a brief survey after the event.

Christmas is a special time of year, and sharing the Christmas magic with one another can help in team building, creativity, and a general positive attitude. And a professional event planner can build on the Christmas theme to make your company’s Christmas event memorable and effective.
